Job Details and Description

Description: The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) reports to the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) as part of the Elections Office team (www.su.ualberta.ca/elections). The DRO works to improve the quality and effectiveness of the Students' Union elections. This is achieved through providing neutral administrative and marketing support to the Elections Office. The DRO may also take on extra responsibilities from the Chief Returning Officer as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the CRO, create a comprehensive advertising strategy (physical advertising and online advertising) for candidate recruitment and voting for the general election in February & March 2018.

Liaise with the necessary parties, mostly the SU's Marketing and Communications department, to create visual advertising materials for the elections.

Obtain advertising space in the Gateway, on SU TV, and any other relevant advertising spaces on campus.

Update the elections website with information on elections dates, nomination package availability, candidate lists, forum dates, where/when to vote, and voting results.

Update social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter with relevant elections information consistently.

Assist with the set up and organization of the Elections Office prior to the mandatory candidates' meeting and maintenance throughout the campaign period.

Assist with clean up of the Elections Office after campaigning has finished.

Explore other mediums to connect with candidates over the campaign period (eg. mobile phone apps).

Assist the CRO with other tasks as needed, including but not limited to counting candidates' campaign materials, verifying nominations, and moderating forums.
Qualifications: Must be a University of Alberta undergraduate student registered in a minimum of one course for credit in each of the Fall and Winter terms in the 2018-2019 academic year, and paid Students’ Union fees in full.

Excellent communication (both written and oral), and interpersonal skills.

Very strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Experience using office computer software and internet-based applications including social media.

Willingness and ability to work varying hours and a commitment to working posted office hours acceptable to the Chief Returning Officer.

Experience with SU elections and marketing campaigns is an asset.

Must have the ability to be impartial and neutral.

Union exempt.
